About Us
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." - Mahatma Gandhi
Our Story
Walter is the first generation of his family to arrive in the United States and like all of us we arrived with no guidance or idea of how to function in this country, Walter was fortunate to have a community member step in and teach him what it takes to succeed in this country we call America, forever changing his vision of how kindness can go a long way.
Fast forward to 2020, a year we all don’t eagerly look back on when the pandemic hit at its highest and the greater community was severely affected and concerned for what this unknown future would bring. Walter saw this as an opportunity to help reach out, providing information and assurance to other community members. Thus starting, Danbury Al Día, a Facebook community group, with a record high of over 50,000 followers.
Since then, Walter has successfully coordinated food drives, providing food necessities to over 1000 local families. He continued sharing information with the public about what was happening in the community, where other food drives were located, and where people could get a hot meal for free from local restaurants. As Walter continued spreading these positive messages, so too did other members of the community, showing just how helpful our community could be as they provided help to one another when it was needed most.
As the Danbury Al Día Facebook group grew and grew, many local businesses asked if they could post promotions to try to get more foot traffic for their businesses. Without hesitation, Walter agreed with the thought that it would all help to strengthen our community and our local businesses as it helped them to succeed. At this time, Walter recognized the need for a place to get local resources and free information as he saw a trend within the community of many not knowing where to go or who to get help from. He was able to redirect people to organizations providing free services such as the Danbury Library, WIC, CIFC, and many more. From this sparked an idea of how he could truly make a greater impact, bigger even than what he had already done.
Present day, Walter has pursued his dream to start a non-profit organization, Greater Danbury Services, where his main goal is to help people find where to get the services and resources they need while educating them on how to better themselves, their community, and their futures. With his team, all impacted by the help Walter provided in the early days of the Pandemic, they have decided to join forces and create a non-profit where they can return the favor of kindness by helping others.
